Nigeria: Tension Mounts in Edo Over Chieftaincy Stool

Benin — Tension is brewing in Atte, a community in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State over who becomes the next traditional ruler following the death of the village head, Francis Igbafe. The late traditional ruler who succeeded his father, Benson Igbafe was said to have died in exile in Igarra. But some persons in the community are protesting a state edict of 1979 which made the ascension to the throne known as Ogiewa hereditary instead of rotating it between the two recognized ruling houses of Ewure and Irhofio.

This is coming barely two weeks after the kingship tussle between two cousins in South Ibie , a community in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state which led to the loss of lives and property .According to a petition sent to the government by members of the Irhofio ruling house through their solicitor, R. O. Isenalumhe & Co., they claimed that it was their turn to produce the next ruler.
