53 percent of households in Nigeria are without adequate clean water, according to a report released by the Joint Monitoring Proramme (JMP) of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.
According to the report for 2008, the 'proportion of the population using water from improved sources has decreased by 3% from 1990 to 2006 as early figure show that in 1990 half (50%) of the population used water from improved sources while in 2006 slightly less than half (47%) used water from improved sources.'
It further said that while access to improved source of drinking water is generally low in the country the urban areas have higher proportion of those with access than the rural areas giving a breakdown of 65% in the urban areas s against 30% in the rural areas.
On the issue of sanitation, the report revealed that the sanitation sector is 'increasing' modestly even though Nigeria is still at the bottom of 25 countries in terms of sanitation coverage.
"In 1990 just over a quarter (26%) of the population used improved sanitation facilities, while in 2006 almost one third (30%) use improved sanitation facilities as it further revealed the figure of 35% coverage in urban areas as against 25% in the rural areas," the report revealed.
The report added however that Nigeria is not on track to reach the MDG target of 75% coverage for safe drinking water and 63% coverage for basic sanitation by the year 2015 and I decried the low participation of civil societies and NGOs in the sector. It further called on all the three tiers of government to revisit sector investment level and patterns as well as mobilize civil and political commitment to meet the sector's demands on the population.
