Nigeria: Actionaid Boss Restates Importance of Women Education

Country Director of the ActionAid Nigeria, Abdul Hussaini, has observed that education of women will enhance the development of the nation.

Hussaini spoke in Abuja on Wednesday at a conference on girls' education, which theme was "Violence Against Girls in School".

"We in ActionAid in collaboration with our partners are very interested in girl-child education because we believe that the education of the girl is very important for national development.

"Because our population actually shows that 50 per cent of the citizens of this country are women and we don't actually get them to contribute directly in development activities in the country," he said.

According to him, enrolment of the girl-child in school in some northern parts of the country poses a great problem and the organisation's focus is to correct the situation.

He said apart from some cultural practices, violence against girls in school contributed to their minimal number in school.

Abdul said some of the violence could be physical, psychological and emotional.

"That is why we gather even the children to hear from them and see how best we can help."
