Nigeria: FG to Enforce Ban on Smoking

The Federal Government is set to enforce the no smoking ban in public places in the Federal Capital Territory and advocate for a legislation to ensure its total ban in the country.

The Minister of Health, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin who gave the hint while speaking during the world no tobacco, lamented that 'tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the world, responsible for many diseases.

Osotimehin said a bill on tobacco control in Nigeria was being drafted process "and when it is passed it will take care of the no smoking ban put in place by the FCTA administration and have it enforced.

Meanwhile the World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday said about 5 milllion people lose their lives from effects of tobacco adding that the number will rise to almost 10 million in 2020.
