Addis Ababa — Thousands of people around the world joined the World Food Program and its major corporate partners on Sunday in a walk event that aims to raise awareness and money to feed hungry school children in poorest countries of the world.

"End Hunger: Walk the World", an annual event now in its seventh year in the world and fifth time in Ethiopia saw people walking for hunger in 70 countries. It begin in Australia with a climb up the Sydney Harbour Bridge and continue through all 24 time zones and marked by pop concerts in Indonesia and traditional Maasai dances in Kenya, and concluded on the Pacific island of Samoa.

"Walk the World comes at a time of unprecedented challenges for the hungry and the poor," said Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of WFP. "Children are suffering because food prices are still high in many developing countries, and the global financial crisis is now hitting family incomes hard." In Ethiopia, the Walk takes place in 9 major cities including the capital, Addis Ababa and thousands of people were participated.

"We believe that hunger is not acceptable in today's would," said Mohamed Diab, Representative and Country Director of WFP Ethiopia. "All those who take part in and support this walk will show their sympathy and solidarity to raise funds to give hungry school children their deserved daily meals," he added.

WFP's Food for Education Programme in Ethiopia currently assists over half a million children in 915 schools in food insecure areas of Afar, Oromiya, Amhara, SNNP, Tigray and Somali regions.

It costs WFP just 20 Euro cents to provide a nutritious meal to a child at school. School feeding programmes also give parents an extra incentive to keep their children in school, and help to lay a healthy foundation for a better future for the young.
