Angola: Drugs Traffickers Travelling From Brazil Change Strategy- Police Report

11 June 2009

Luanda — The Luanda Police Command informed on Thursday that drugs traffickers that travel from Brazil are now using the domestic terminal of Luanda's 4 de Fevereiro Airport and also travelling by land within the country, but entering Angola through neighbouring states.

Speaking to ANGOP, in Ingombota District, first superintendent Jorge Bengui, with the Provincial Police Command, revealed that the traffickers are using routes like Rio de Janeiro (Brasil)/ Kinshasa (DRC), Congo Brazzaville/Cabinda (Angola)/Luanda, and Rio de Janeiro/ Windhoek (Namibia)/Ondjiva (Angola)/Luanda.

He also said that the drug is often carried in the stomach as capsules, and the traffickers now avoid the International Terminal of 4 de Fevereiro Airport, due to the strictness of police monitoring in that port of entry.

"They are mistaken when they use the Domestic Terminal and land routes, because supervision is strict in any of the places", the police officer warned.

He revealed that this week, the authorities detained three drug dealers, one Angolan lady with two kilograms of cocaine in the stomach and two DR Congolese.

The Angolan citizen, 35, has used the route Rio de Janeiro/RDC/Cabinda/Luanda, and was detained at the Domestic Terminal.

Meanwhile, throughout this year, the authorities have already detained in Luanda 15 drugs traffickers, most of them were stopped at the International Terminal.
