About 10,000 out of the 12,000 primary school teachers in Jigawa State are unqualified, chairman of the 11-man committee set up by the government to source for quality teachers, Professor Kabiru Isyaku has said.
Presenting the report to the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Aminu Abdullahi Taura, Professor Isyaku who was represented by a member of the committee, Mr. Dennis Okoro said the committee also discovered that the number of teachers produced by the Jigawa State College of Education, Gumel was too insignificant to solve the problem.
"The teacher capacity production of the college is 823. This has indicated a gap of over 2000 teachers. Unless appropriate measures are taken, the state will experience a short fall of about 1000 teachers by 2014," he said. He added that strategies and frameworks aimed at salvaging the situation had been provided in the report, adding that some of the recommendations included, strengthening the capacity of the state College of Education, Gumel, to enable it produce more teachers.
Isyaku said the committee also recommended the adoption of multi-grade schools in the rural areas. Responding,the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Aminu Abdullahi Taura commended the committee for a job well done and assured that government would do its best to implement the recommendations. The committee was set up by the government in January 2009 to advise it on strategies that would ensure steady supply of qualified teachers.
