Kenya: We Are Not Rebels, Breakaway Catholic Group Says

12 June 2009

Machakos — A breakaway faction of married priests says they are not rebels but a personal prelature within the Roman Catholic Church.

The Married Priests Now movement, led by Father Daniel Kisomo formerly of the diocese of Machakos told CISA that their prelature is formed according to Canon Law Para 294-297.

"Ours is the Catholic Prelature of St Peter and Paul and we are within the Universal Roman Catholic Church," said the former priest who is set to be ordained as the group's first bishop in Kenya." He, however, did not state the date and venue of the much hyped ordination which he claims will be presided over by excommunicated Zambian Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo.

Kisomo added that his group has seven priests although they had received many applications from former priests wanting to be admitted into the group. The vetting process, he said, is very strict as each application is carefully considered.

"We are advocating for married priests to be allowed in their mission and not be excommunicated for being honest," he told CISA.

Reports of breakaway Catholic factions have recently resurfaced in Kenya with another group led by former Kitale priest, Godfrey Shiundu ordaining a bishop and priests in western Kenya last month.

There has been no official directive from the Kenya Episcopal Conference to Catholics regarding the breakaway groups.
