Somalia: Fresh Fighting Starts in Mogadishu

14 June 2009

Mogadishu — At least three government soldiers have been killed and several others have been injured after heavy fighting between the soldiers started in Ex-control Afgoi in the south of the Somali capital of Mogadishu , witnesses told Shabelle on Sunday.

Sources said that it is unclear the grounds of the fighting between the government soldiers so far, but reports say that government soldiers escorting a convoy carrying food for the displaced people out of the capital had clashed with other government soldiers who were collecting taxation money from the traffic in Ex-control Afgoi south of the capital.

A witness who declined his name to be disclosed told Shabelle radio that at least three of the warring government soldiers died in the fighting and injured more others.

Residents said that the fighting is continuing as the heavy of gunfire could be heard in and around the capital.

We tried to contact with some of the government officials to know more about the fighting but they declined to comment more about the war which is currently going on the street that connects between Sey Biano and Ex-control Afgoi where the fighting started.
