Zimbabwe: Chipawo to Present New HIV Production

Harare — THE Children's Performing Arts Workshop will this week present a new theatrical performance dubbed Participatory Theatre Communication, a method designed to address issues relating to HIV/Aids to girls and young women.

The production, to run under the title "Act out Tackling HIV and Aids through theatre communications" is the first of its kind by Chipawo, and fuses theatre with discussions and dialogue to fully engage the audience.

Tafadzwa Malenga, an assistant executive director with the organisation said the production will coincide with the Day of the African Child, commemorated annually in Africa on June 16.

Ambassador Xavier Marchal, who is the head of delegation of the European Union to Zimbabwe -- who are funding the project -- is expected to grace the occasion.

"It is hoped that if the model is seen to be effective, funding will be forthcoming for expansion of the project," said Malenga.

She added that presentations would be characterised by full participation of the audience who will be given a floor to participate on the issues that would have been raised by in play.

Malenga said the PTC session was not only an act out performance but simply a way of presenting problems, questions and challenges to the girls attending the communication session.
