Nigeria: Uduaghan Re-Assures Militants on Amnesty

Asaba — Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has promised his administration's full support for the rehabilitation of armed youth that would agree to turn a new leaf as the Federal Government renewed it's amnesty to persons in the Niger-Delta region willing to lay down their arms.

Uduaghan, who made the promise, while answering questions from newsmen on the report submitted by the Presidential Panel on Amnesty and Disarmament, said a new opportunity has been given to militants in the creeks to restore peace and economic life to the waterways.

He commended President Umar Musa Yar'Adua and the Committee for working out modalities for the amnesty and promised that the state would be involved in implementing the details when released.

In his words "The Federal Government has agreed to work out modalities for amnesty within two weeks, when it is released the state government will be involved in the rehabilitation of armed youths that will be willing to lay down their arms and whatever the modalities will entail."

The governor maintained that the state wants a peaceful waterways for improved economic activates, industrial growth and better life for the people of the area especially riverine communities involved in fishing and coastal transportation.

He further said: "We want peaceful waterways, it is very critical that we have a safe waterways for improved economic activities, for industrial growth and for an improved life for the common man."
