On Friday afternoon a man walked into the Nedbank branch in St Georges Mall, pointed a gun at a teller and a person in the queue and demanded money.
Cape Town police spokesperson Inspector Carin Loock said the man was recognised by bank staff and he fled without any money.
"We have yet to make an arrest," she said.
There have been a number of bomb threats in the city this week and police are investigating whether the calls were linked.
