Abuja — The newly constituted technical board for Nigerian Telecommunications plc (NITEL) and its mobile arm Mobile Telecommunication (MTEL) is expected to take over the affairs of the ailing enterprise at the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) today.

It could be recalled that the National Council on Privatization (NCP), the organ of government overseeing privatisation in Nigeria had two weeks ago, revoked the sale of NITE/MTEL to Transnational Corporation of Nigeria (Transcorp) and in its place, set up an interim technical management board to oversee the activities of the enterprises pending conclusion of the sale of the moribund first national carrier.

The technical board, which is chaired by Permanent Secretary, Information and Communications Ministry, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammad, include BPE Director General, Dr. Christopher Anyanwu; Head of Service of the Federation and former Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Steve Oronsaye, as members.

Others on the board are the yet-to-be appointed acting managing director of NITEL; Director, Information and Communication of BPE, Mr. Ibrahim Kashim; SSA on economic matters to the Vice President to represent Goodluck Jonathan on the board, Mr. Sam Worlu, representative of the NCP and the managing director of NIGCOMSAT Ltd.
