Nigeria: Fire Guts DRTV

15 June 2009

Lagos — A midnight fire incident gutted vital facilities of the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Warri, weekend, and put television and radio transmission temporarily off air.

A statement by the Acting General Manager, Mr Eric James, noted that urgent and ad hoc measures had been put in place, which resulted in resumption of broadcast services on both radio and television.

The fire, which was said to have been noticed at about 12.05a.m. from the main television studio, was eventually contained through the combined efforts of fire fighters from Delta State Fire Service, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), after several hours.

Commissioner for Information, Mr Oma Djebah, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Gift Nikoro, and some senior officials of the ministry on a visit to the station yesterday, assured that the state government would take drastic and immediate actions to ensure that the station is back on full swing, to "provide even better and improved services to Deltans and the general public."
