Nigeria: Prostitutes Take Over Abuja Streets

Abubakar Yakubu

15 June 2009

Abuja — Prostitutes in large numbers have taken over some popular streets in the Federal Capital Territory at night. At Port Harcourt crescent off Gimbiya street, Garki, Abuja, our reporter observed half nude ladies exposing their busts and panties, beckoning on motorists to pick them for the night.

The situation was somehow similar at Sheraton hotel junction where young ladies lined up right from the entrance of the junction to a shopping plaza along the street.

On the roads leading to Transcorp Hotel and close to UBA at Wuse 11, ladies soliciting for men were also seen by the roadsides.

Married women were seen complaining about the freedom given to these ladies to expose themselves on the streets and one of them even pointed to a police patrol car parked at the entrance of Gimbiya street.

"Such women breed criminals in any area and the police should clamp down on them immediately," a married woman said.

At the FCT Police Command, a police officer said prostitution is prohibited in Abuja.

"We have clamped down on them on several instances and even charged them to court where they pleaded guilty and were convicted," the police officer stated.

It is critical to quickly corral these women, remove the HIV+ ones from the street, and give the others a hard and detailed education on HIV prevention. Great grief you will get otherwise.

This is a bad news and a disgrace to any good goverrnment. Granded, there is a bad situation of unemployment in the country with young and qualified able bodies, but that should not be an excuse for these women to be parading themeselves shamelessly, submitting themselves to men they might have no prior knowledge of. It is the responsibility of the government to stop this bad act and to cater for these ladies, thus saving the people, the ladies themselves and its name as a government. Anthing less is unfortunate.

It is wrong for anybody to sell part of his/her body for sex. However, this is a very old profession and is not the fault of who is ruling Nigeria. I read for example, two weeks ago that girls who are as young as 14 yrs of age have started "Tongue Jobs" in some parts of this great America for a fee. Now, what do you think will happen in a "hell-hole" like Naigeriya?

It is believe that now that nigeria has embarked on rebranding aspects it is imperative that, prostitutes should be banned from the streets of Abuja because the rebranding aspeects is all about changing the attitudes, ideas, characters and thoughts which conveys the positive image about Nigeria and in the international community. Prostitution is evil! as Nigerians we have lost grounds on many fronts like good interstate relationships and good public image abroad, we have been called several names by our counterparts in around the globe. however, after every criticisms we and our critics are heavily convinced that Nigeria is a country loaded with morally rich citizens. prostitution is never what we are known for and characterised by. government must step in to knock off the strangle-hold that prostitution is about to have on our people and state! I think this is an issue to be addressed and proffer solution to by the government, the well-to-does in our society and the political big wigs.

These people need the necessities of life like you and me. Some of this people are homeless, jobless, hepless, hopeless, oppressed ..... Those that operate in the major cities of Nigeria worm the bed of our political leaders. 90% of common man do not go after prostitute, but 75% of Big wigs use these ladies to worm their bed. If these girls have not been getting customer / client, they must have been out of business. so, some people enjoy their service. What do you think?

Social welfare should be introduced to our economy. We have enough to pay for those who are out of job, the old people and the children from the age 1 to 17. This happens in western world. For instance, irish source revenue is a peanut compare to the nigerian source of revenue. Still people are paid social welfare by irish government.

Have you ever being homeless? Have you ever being helpless, Have you ever being jobless? if your answer is YES to any of these problem and you do not have anybody to render assistance, you will understand what I am talking about.

Thank God, I have never had any of these problems. Any time I am in Nigeria, I see poverty and problems boldly written on the faces of guys. If you care to listen to their story, especially the ladies, you will understand that nigerian leaders have failed, in many ways, in discharging their responsibilities to the citizens.

To be sincere, these people need help, job and decent means of livelihood. So, government, group and individuals should proffer solution to their problem.

Those who are surprised that prostitutes have taken over Abuja have not visited the streets of European cities where you will find Nigerian women dominating the red light district. What do we expect in a society where there is no welfare payment,no employment insurance,no disability payments.Come to think of it, what does governmrnts in Nigeria do for the average citizen who is or have fallen through the crack ZERO.With the current economic situation, we should brace ourselves for more cities to be taken over by these ladies. After all, many cities in Nigeria have already been taken over by armed robbers and kidnappers.
