Zambia: State Tipped On Setting Up Museums

15 June 2009

THE Lunda Cultural Association of Zambia (LUCAZ) has urged the Government to consider establishing museums to showcase their culture in all the districts.

LUCAZ chairperson Newton Samakayi said having local museums would help promote the typical cultures of the specific cultural groupings and inhabitants of each of the districts.

Mr Samakayi, who was speaking during the association's annual fundraising dinner at Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka on Saturday evening, said the Lunda culture had some unique and definite cultural activities that were not showcased.

He said LUCAZ stood to promote the Lunda culture to greater heights by marketing and promoting traditional ceremonies and other cultural activities such as the Mukanda initiation practices.

Among the ceremonies that the association has been supporting are the Lunda Lubanza, by Senior Chief Ishindi of Zambezi, Nkisu ya Nzambi by Senior Chief Museli in Solwezi, and the Nyawunda, Chisemwa cha Lunda and Chidika cha Nvula by Senior Chief Sailung'a, Senior Chief Kanong'esha and Chief Kanyama, respectively, all of Mwinilunga.

Mr Samakayi said in order to promote socio-economic development among the Lunda communities, the association was supporting some university students with financial resources as well as assisting some vulnerable farmers with fertiliser.

Officiating at the function, Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Michael Kaingu said the Government wished to promote and safeguard Zambia's cultural heritage because of the importance of culture to development.

"The more we interpret culture in the development process, the more effective the development process will be," the minister said.
