Namibia: Petrol's Up, Diesel Down

MOST motorists will pay between 20 and 21 cents per litre more for petrol from today, instead of the 19 cents per litre increase announced by Government, to foot the rail transport bill which has increased by five per cent.

Likewise, few motorists will pay 10 cents per litre less for diesel. Most will have to be satisfied with a reduction of between seven and nine cents per litre. At Walvis Bay and Okahandja, consumers will pay only 19 cents per litre more for their unleaded and lead-replacement petrol (LRP).

However, when it comes to diesel, just Walvis Bay is 10 cents per litre cheaper. At Okahandja, the pump price dropped by only nine cents per litre at one minute past midnight. Motorists in Windhoek have to absorb an increase of 20 cents per litre for petrol, with unleaded now selling at N$6,84 per litre and LRP at N$6,80 per litre.

Diesel is nine cents per litre less, costing N$6,74 in the capital. Other towns where motorists will have to fork out 20 cents per litre more for petrol are Grootfontein, Otavi, Otjiwarongo, Twyfelfontein, Keetmanshoop, Mariental and Oranjemund.

At Gobabis, Karasburg, Endola, Onyuulaye and Tsumeb motorists are slapped with a petrol price increase of 21 cents per litre. Regarding the different diesel price increases, Endola, Gobabis, Lüderitz, Mariental, Onyuulaye, Otjiwarongo, Tsumeb and Twyfelfontein saw a drop of nine cents per litre.

At Otavi, Oranjemund, Grootfontein and Keetmanshoop diesel is eight cents per litre cheaper. At Karasburg, however, the diesel price decreased by only seven cents a litre.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy yesterday said this discrepancy is a one-off and happens yearly when TransNamib adjusts it tariffs. The next fuel price adjustment will be the same throughout Namibia.

Beside TransNamib's five per cent increase, today's adjustment also includes an increase of four cents per litre (petrol and diesel) for the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, as well as an increase of two cents per litre of diesel for the National Energy Fund.
