Secretary General of the International Organisation of the Francophony (OIF) Abdou Diouf is expected in Lome next Saturday on a three-day visit to Togo, official sources said. Mr. Diouf will hold talks with the local authorities on the cooperation between Togo and the OIF in the areas of cultural and linguistic diversity, peace, democ r acy, human rights and education.
In 2005, the OIF suspended Togo after denouncing a "constitutional coup" perpetrated by the Army and the ruling party, following the death of President Gnassingbé Eyadéma.
The OIF believed the two played a key role in the assumption of power by one of the sons of the deceased, Faure, in contravention of the country's constitution. The suspension was lifted some months later after the presidential election, als o won by Faure Gnassingbé.
