Southern Africa: SADC Worried About Political Situation in Madagascar

22 June 2009

Luanda — The heads of State and Government of SADC gathered at an extraordinary Summit last Saturday, in South Africa, manifested deep concern about the deterioration of the political situation in Madagascar, characterised by the increment of hostilities among the country's various political groups and noticed the slowness in the process of dialogue among the parties involved.

Presided by the current chairman of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), South African President Jacob Zuma, the extraordinary meeting reminded and reiterated the decisions of March 2009, reached in Lozitha Royal Palace, Swaziland, on the urgent need to restore constitutional order in that country.

The Angolan Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, was represented at the meeting by the Foreign Affairs minister, Assunção do Anjos.

The summit noticed with consideration the efforts of the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) towards for the restoration of the constitutional order in Madagascar, and decided that SADC will continue to co-ordinate its mediation efforts in that country, with the African Union and the United Nations.

The extraordinary meeting also underlined that the political dialogue in Madagascar must belong to the people of that country.

Among other things, the summit also chose the former Mozambican President, Joaquim Alberto Chissano, supported by a team of top level mediators, to lead and co-ordinate an inclusive dialogue in Madagascar.

The next Ordinary Summit of SADC's Heads of State and Government will take place in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, in the first week of September this year.
