Tunisia: Tabarka Jazz Festival Returns With a Bang With 2009 Edition

18 June 2009

Tunis — The coastal seaside resort of Tabarka will soon resonate again to the sound of jazz music. With the announcement of the 2009 Jazz Festival from July 10 to 19, 2009, the coral city is actively preparing for a momentous event.

This year too, the festival will take place in Tabarka's basilica which has already hosted such major jazz figures as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Keith Jarrett, Charles Mingus, but also Manu Dibango and the late Myriam Makeba.

For this year's edition, organizers have invited such prestigious figures as Alpha Blondie, Al Di Meola, Boi Akih and Billy Cobham. Tunisian jazzmen will not be amiss with performances from Adel Jouini, Nebil Khemir and the Mraihi brothers, expected to take place.

The 2009 edition, which marks the festival's resumption, will gather artists from many nationalities and artistic influences; reggae, ethno jazz, electro, latino, rock and funk will enthral the festival's aficionados who will be flocking to the festival's main scene but also to its free open air concerts on the marina and on the Tabarka's main street.

The rise of the phoenix for an event which over the years has become one of the major jazz festivals in the world and which undoubtedly deserves a much better fate than to disappear with a whimper.
