Zimbabwe: Parly Ratifies SADC Protocol on Science and Technology

20 June 2009

Harare — PARLIAMENT has ratified the Sadc Protocol on Science and Technology and Innovation aimed at improving the sector among member countries.

Senate ratified the protocol on Wednesday while the House of Assembly had adopted the protocol when it sat last month.

The protocol will now be presented to the President for signing.

Science and Technology Minister Heneri Dzinotyiwei said Sadc countries had committed themselves to closer co-operation in order to address challenges of development throughout the region.

"At this particular time, the idea is to introduce the sector on Science and Technology Innovation as one of the channels for contributing to development," said Minister Dzinotyiwei when he moved the motion for ratification in the Senate this week.

He said the science and technology sector was cross-cutting in that it appeared virtually in all sectors such as agriculture and health, among others.

"It is, therefore, the intention to collaborate and see if we can raise the level of science and technology in member countries of Sadc," said Minister Dzinotyiwei.

"The overall objective is to encourage cooperation and promote development, transfer and mastering of science and innovation in member states."
