Maputo — The four members of the New Age cult "Orgonise Africa", released a week ago from a prison in the western Mozambican province of Tete, are faced with a bill of 8,400 US dollars from their lawyer, Herminio Nhantumbo.
At least, that is what the leader of the group, Georg Ritschl, a German architect resident in South Africa, claims in a Forum on the website of "Etheric Warriors", one of the meaningless titles which this group gives itself.
Their escapade in Mozambique has thus proved extremely costly. Ritschl says that the group has had to leave their Landrover and boat in Tete as a guarantee for the money they owe the lawyer.
The four spent 53 days in jails in Tete because they were caught dumping a substance called orgonite into the Cahora Bassa lake. Their claims that they were doing so to combat "negative energy" and enhance "positive energy" did little to improve their credibility.
The police and security authorities, knowing nothing of the peculiar world view of "Orgonise Africa", could only see four foreigners tipping an unknown substance off the side of a boat into one of Mozambique's most important inland water resources. The Cahora Bassa lake is of growing importance for tourism and contains a major fishery. Crucially it lies behind the Cahora Bassa dam, the second largest hydroelectric dam in Africa, and one of Mozambique's most important economic assets.
So the four found themselves charged with sabotage, pollution and smuggling. Only when the authorities received the results of laboratory tests done in South Africa and Brazil, showing that orgonite is harmless, were they released.
Orgonite consists of metal shavings (in this case aluminium), quartz crystals and fibre-glass resin. Anyone with time on their hands can make the stuff in their kitchen. Despite its mundane contents, the "etheric warriors" claim extraordinary properties for orgonite, which "can be made and used by every person on this planet to improve the ambient energy field".
It converts "negative energy" into "positive energy". This depends on the theories of the crazed Austrian psychiatrist, Wilhelm Reich, who claimed he had discovered a universal form of energy which he called orgone, and which was active everywhere from the molecular level to the formation of galaxies.
Orgone has a negative form, which Reich called "negative orgone" or DOR. Reich died 57 years ago and no scientist has found any evidence for the existence of orgone, either positive or negative.
But never expect the absence of proof to hinder the activities of a determined cult. If nobody else believes them, that is evidence, not that they might be wrong, but that the truth is being hidden by a gigantic international conspiracy, which the orgone enthusiasts dub "the New World Order", run by a sinister group of "Illuminati".
This paranoid worldview also means that any setback can be explained as part of the conspiracy. So Ritschl, in his latest contribution to the "Etheric Warriors" Internet forum, says that imprisonment in Mozambique was "a major onslaught of the New World Order dudes to stop Orgonise Africa".
Why should the New World Order care about lumps of orgonite in the Cahora Bassa Lake? Because there was a diabolical plot afoot to deprive Zimbabwe of its water through the power of an occult pentagram. Yes, a pentagram - one of those five pointed stars that Satanists draw on the floor to summon the devil in B-grade horror movies.
On the Etheric Warriors forum, one of the group named Francie (fortunate enough not to go on the expedition) claimed that she and Ritschl discovered the pentagram, which had one of its points at Zumbo, at the western end of Cahora Bassa lake.
"The negative objective of the occult pentagram was to hold power over Zimbabwe, and putting the anchors in water was a cruel attempt to stop the flow of moisture into Zimbabwe", Francie claimed. Of course, the pentagram only exists as lines on a map, which she and Ritschl drew, and bears no relation to anything on the ground.
This is a game that anyone can play. Take a map, draw on it a couple of superimposed triangles that form a five pointed star, and you have your pentagram. Any evil effects of this drawing will be the work of a feverish imagination, rather than of any New World Order.
A few days after the "discovery" of the pentagram, according to Don Croft, the guru of the orgone cult, a group of psychics "got together at Francie's request in the middle of last week to help Friederike (Ritschl's wife) endure and prevail. They found a coven of satanic Jesuits in a ritual, desperately trying to reverse the healing that all the orgonite in the reservoir in Mozambique had instigated on the big pentagram that Francie had discovered".
That's not a misprint - the Catholic order of Jesuits is also part of the international conspiracy. With one piece of nonsense tumbling after the next, it is no surprise that, a couple of paragraphs later Croft mentions a "suggestion that the pyramids might hold a key to unravelling the corporate world order further. When Carol (his wife) went there (with our boosts) she found an enormous vortex and the largest well of souls to date. She also saw limitless treasure underground, there, and bright light streaming out of ancient chambers under the pyramids".
("Boosts", incidentally, means that she didn't visit the pyramids in person, but just had some kind of vision. The pyramids, of course, are the most thoroughly explored monuments of all antiquity, and they do not sit on top of mysterious underground treasure chambers).
After this, I was looking forward to how the Knights Templar would fit into this world view. And sure enough, two paragraphs later we are told "The Jesuits grew out of masonry, by the way, which grew out of the Knights Templar. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, had been a high ranking mason and the seamless nature of the two organizations' agenda is kind of like the way National Socialism grew into prominence in Germany, Britain and the US at the same time in the 1930s. Same thing but different rhetoric".
Nazism grew into prominence in the United States? Surely there's a historical blunder of huge proportions here? Not at all! According to Croft, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was a Nazi - he "turned the American republic into a National Socialist regime", a detail which has inexplicably gone missing from my history books.
A couple of days later Francie returns to the Forum claiming that she has had "an interesting experience with malicious thoughtforms it looked like a cloud of dark flapping negative bats to me. We traced it back to its source in, surprise!, a Jesuit center in Africa that I believe has been sending a 24/7 psi attack on Friederike. They've been directing dark, magical thoughtforms about the Zambezi expedition".
People who believe this stuff will believe anything. Poring over the orgone websites, we find other familiar staples of modern, paranoid conspiracy theories - that AIDS was cooked up in a chemical warfare laboratory, or that the terrorist attacks against New York and Washington on 11 September 2001 were "an inside job".
There are new twists as well - thus some of the most recent posts suggest that Air France flight 447, which crashed in the Atlantic earlier this month, was shot down, perhaps as a New World Order "sacrifice ritual".
We find that Francie has been having her visions again, this time of sinister forces in the mid-Atlantic: "At the bottom of the ocean, near the plane's crash site, Francie found dark energy. It had the shape of a disc, but when we looked closer, it seemed more like a lid. Something was beneath it. Unlike our usual efforts, the energy also turned darker when we boosted it. Like there was more negativity under there It appeared to be a tunnel system of some sort, undersea. Francie had aliens in mind. The sheer vastness of it, along with the darkness of the energy, led us to think this might be a stargate to other worlds".
No wonder the Mozambican police found it difficult to understand such people!
