Eritrea: June 20 - Their Memory... Our Pride

20 June 2009

editorial

Asmara — The very existence of the people and Government of Eritrea is wholly founded upon the sacrifice that our martyrs have paid.

We own such a proud history thanks to our martyrs. And hence, as it is, the nation building process we are undertaking currently is fueled by the oath we have taken. When they gave their one and only life selflessly for Eritrea, they had no doubt that this nation shall eventually become one of justice and prosperity.

Today, June 20th is Martyrs Day. It is a Day in which we remember our martyrs and hold candle vigils. This day, not only will Eritreans inside the country and in the Diaspora honor the men and women who have given their lives for independence and preserving it, but it is also a date in which we renew our pledge to their legacy.

Eritrea guaranteed its existence and independence paying an enormous price, a cost that stands as a reminder of a cogent pledge. The Eritrean people, standing firm in this pledge, have accomplished a lot in the development drive proving that they honor the trust of the martyrs.

We consult this pledge every time as it established solid groundwork for our existence, continuity and prosperity. To build a nation as envisaged by our martyrs, we should arm ourselves with their visions, as it is impossible to accomplish the tasks short of that. To put the cause of the people and nation above anything else, steadfastness, dedication, hard work, resistance and commitment to justice and truth are the hallmark of our martyrs. These national legacies that are more worthy than an assortment of gems should be guarded with utmost fervor and dedication. And on the occasion of this hallowed moment, we renew our pledge to honor the trust of our martyrs.
