Three eminent personalities-former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Lamido of Adamawa Dr Aliyu Musdafa and the Nobel Laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, were awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by the American University of Nigeria (AUN).
The recipients were honoured yesterday at the first graduation ceremony of the American University of Nigeria, which took place in Yola, Adamawa State.
AUN authorities said the three eminent personalities were honoured in recognition of their various significant contributions to the development of the university.
The university also awarded nearly 90 bachelor's degrees to graduating students who in September 2005 were enrolled in the university's three components namely School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business and Entrepreneurship, and School of Information Technology and Communications.
Daily Trust learnt that more than 10 percent of the graduating students have either secured jobs with highly reputable employers or gained admissions into graduate schools in universities such as Cornell University, Georgetown University, Michigan State University, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Surrey, University of Alberta, Bradford University and other top-ranked universities worldwide.
Minister of Education Dr Sam Egwu represented President Umaru Musa Yar'adua at the ceremony.
