Africa: Desertification Threatens 1 Billion People

Globally according to the United Nations, desertification and land degradation affect one third of the Earth's' surface, threatening the livelihoods, well-being and development of as many as 1 billion people with about 4 million Nigeria populace affected. This disclosure was made by the minister of Environment Mr. John Odey at the Press briefing on world Desertification Day held on Friday at the conference hall, Mabushi , Abuja office of the ministry . Odey said that the 2009 world Desertification Day will be held in Dutse, Jigawa state on 23rd July, 2009 with the participation of all frontline states, buffer states and other stakeholders.

He added that this year's World Desertification Day will go in line with the nationwide afforestation programme of the federal government.

The minister spoke at length about the dangers posed by desertification, saying it has threatens human security by depriving people their means of livelihood by taking away food, access to water , the means of economic activities , and even their homes.
