We have carried on our front page today a story from a statement by the "Activist Forum for the New Ghana (AF -NG)". Obviously frustrated by Ghana's political parties, the Forum has asked for the two main parties, the NDC and NPP to be banned! Of course we cannot take such extremist actions in this our democratic dispensation, but we can understand the hyperbole.
The NDC and NPP do often react to one another as though they belong to two different countries at war with.
We have observed, with increasing disappointment, that since 1992 when they were established, these two parties have prosecuted their politics with such implacable enmity, hate and vindictiveness. We are not saying they should be clones in their policy options and programmes, but they should remember that "Oman Ghana Ye Obia Dia" - Ghana belongs to us all. They often forget that.
Between the NDC and NPP, Election 2008 was a leveler of sorts. No landslide win and no overwhelming loss. The electorate spoke loud and clear: We want our politicians to move forward and build a better Ghana! But what do we see now?
The two parties are so polarized that energies needed for development talk are dissipated in endless squabbles over fault-finding and nit-picking.
The politicians are not giving the kind of leadership that would see a true Ghanaian renaissance, and that is worrying.
Six months into the 4-year tenure of a new administration and all that we are constantly bombarded with is how far apart our two main political parties are - nothing in common, not even the country they claim they want to build!
After they have succeeded in thoroughly dividing us, it is left to be seen how our country can move forward and be build into a better place.
No wonder the Activist Forum says they should be banned from future elections!
