Tunisia: AWO's Executive Council Holds Seventh Extraordinary Meeting in Tunis

Tunis — The 7 th Extraordinary Meeting of the Arab Women Organization (AWO) was held in Tunis on Monday. Representatives from 15 of the Organization's member states, took part in the meeting.

The meeting focused notably on the agenda of the 4 th session of AWO's Supreme Council which is due to held on June 25, 2009 in Tunis, as well as on the program of the Organisation's 3 rd Congress which is scheduled in November 2010 in Tunis. It will also examine the proposition by Mrs Leila Ben Ali , the spouse of the President of the Republic and the current President of the Arab Women Organization, relative to the creation of an Arab Women International Humanitarian Law Commission.

The draft agenda also comprises the follow up of the Arab juridical group relative to the convention to fight against any form of discrimination against women, and the relationship between AWO and The League of Arab Nations.

The meeting which will take place during two days, will also examine the report of the works of AWO's executive board from November 2008, date of the previous Council Meeting up to June 2009.

During the opening session of the meeting, Dr Bochra Kanafani Syria's representative and the Council's chairperson expressed her consideration to Mrs Leila Ben Ali as well as to Tunisia for hosting the from June 21 to 25, 2009 the meetings of the Organisation and for ensuring the success of its works.

She voiced the hope that the meeting will give a new boost to common Arab action in terms of the promotion of Arab women, as well as contributing to enriching AWO's achievements and reinforcing its various structures.
