The much talk about gender equality is fast becoming an everyday discussion topic in most human gathering in Cameroon. This can be attributed to high level of awareness on the part of the population. To maintain this and get more response, Light African - Cameroon an NGO got involved in a project entitled "The North West Gender Equality Project".
The project sponsored by UNESCO, SONY ERICSON and Women's Tennis Association is aimed at enhancing gender equality and promote women's leadership in Cameroon. The project will provide Technical assistance to women's groups, unions and forums towards democratic election processes. It will organize female marathon race as well as give out scholarships to female athletes.
Presenting the project to the public the president of Light Africa - Cameroon, Madam Nakeh Sellah Prodentia said her organization is out to promote local development and advocate for the marginalized and minority grassroots people. She said the North West Gender Equality Project's beneficiaries were women and girls from the North West Region and will be extended to other parts of Cameroon. At the end of the project in 2012, they expert increased leadership and organizational capacity of grassroots women's groups, increased Gender awareness at community level, increased awareness about the role of women in society, as well as increased the presence of female athletes in national sporting events.
On her part, the Regional Chief of service for Women Empowerment and the Family, Madam Caroline Bongwa said Gender inequality in still rife in the North West Region as there are still some taboo dishes which are the preserve for men, the inheritance right is in favour of the boy- child. She cited cases where some women have been abandoned in hospitals because of the birth of a girl child. She reminded the public that Gender equality is important not only as a goal in itself but as a path towards achieving other goals. She said her ministry is out to ensure that women's right are respected, advocate the eradication of all forms of discrimination against women as well as to promote gender equality and to empower women to delve in all spheres of life. She appreciated Light Africa and encouraged them to continue in their sensitization process.
Meanwhile the second Assistant SDO for Mezam Muma Charles said the administration is in support of Gender Equality. He encouraged Light Africa- Cameroon to continue in the same light. The Fon of Mankon, Fon Angwafor III emphasized that he has been promoting gender equality in his Fondom. He added that since 1960 he instituted a policy in his Fondom that all girls like boys most go to school.
