Freetown — Members of parliament yesterday approved the new chieftaincy act 2008 which was tabled before the house for approval by the minister of internal affairs, local government and rural development.

The chieftaincy Act 2008 which was tabled before the house on Tuesday June 9, 2009 was the first ever Act to be passed into law for the appointment of paramount chiefs across the country.

Minister of internal affairs told journalists that he was happy that the act has finally been passed into law adding, "This is very important in electing paramount chiefs across the country."

He said the main thrust of the new Act was to ensure that paramount chiefs see themselves as being instrumental to the development and aspirations of the country.

"The bill provides for the election of paramount chiefs by tax payers instead of the Electoral College, mostly comprising chiefdom councilors or so-called traditional authorities," he said.

Kamara said they would ensure that the general public was fully sensitized about the new act, noting that not many people quite understood clearly what the act stood for.

The procedure for electing and appointing paramount chiefs and sub chiefs has been spelt out clearly in the new Chieftaincy Act 2008. The Act has several provisions that seek to guide and protect the way and manner in which paramount chiefs can be elected.
