Freetown — An African Development Bank, ADB mission headed by Consultant, Kwasi Prempeh Agyeman is currently in Sierra Leone to assess and review the first phase of the ADB/MOHS/UNFPA strengthening district health services project in the Bo, Bonthe, Kenema, Tonkolili and Port Loko districts.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the minister of health and sanitation at his Youyi Building office in Freetown, ADB consultant Agyeman and UNFPA consultant Dr. Ismail Thioye Diene said they were in the country to monitor closely key interventions with special focus on activities implemented since the inception of the project.
Mr. Agyeman and Dr. Diene reminded the Minister and Senior officials in the ministry about the ADB November Mission and dilated on issues within the three components of the project which included training, capacity building, rehabilitation and construction of health centers, Drugs procurement and storage, among other areas of concern for the successful implementation of the project.
Responding, health and sanitation minister, described the project as one of the most successful project in the ministry, and lauded the local and international staff for their resourcefulness in complementing the efforts of the ministry towards the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality in the country.
The minister told the team that plans were currently underway to review the storage and distribution of drugs, adding that a Task Force has already been formed to look at the cost recovery drugs programme in the districts and the entire country.
He informed the mission about meetings held with district councils to promote primary health care in their districts, adding that project sites have also been identified for the erection of maternity units and staff accommodation.
The team as part of their mission would be visiting two project districts, Port Loko in the north, and Bo in Southern Sierra Leone.
