Freetown — ActionAid Sierra Leone has marked 21-yrs since it started operations in the country with a determination to fight hunger by all means possible.
Country director Tennyson Williams told journalists in Freetown that his organization was poised to helping fight hunger in the country and continue to work with the poor and excluded.
"Hunger is a major issue and we are doing everything possible to fight it. It is a brutal denial of human rights. As we celebrate our 21-yrs of operations, we are very proud to say that we have achieved a lot," he said.
He reminded all Sierra Leoneans about his organization's importance in nationbuilding adding, "ActionAid started its operations with two chiefdoms in the Kambia district in 1988. We are presently operating in 7 chiefdoms across the country."
He said since the organization started its poverty reduction drive, it was sad to say that poverty has been persistence, noting that the constitution of a country must be fundamental in fighting poverty.
The ActionAid country director said the issues of women would be central to their work adding that women's rights were callously abuse everyday.
"We will ensure that we put women's issues at the forefront of our activities. My team is determined to work even harder to achieve more success. It is our hope that the space we need to achieve a society devoid of injustice, poverty and hunger will continue to be created by state organs," he maintained.
He said ActionAid was a service providing organization and that fund raising was key to the survival of the organization.
