Mysterious deaths still haunt the JM Mall building in downtown Dar es Salaam, which houses the Grand Harbour View Casino and Harbour View Hotel among other prominent institutions.

About three weeks after two foreigners were found dead in the Harbour View hotel rooms, yesterday the police reported the mysterious death of an employee of the Grand Harbour View casino.

The Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander, Mr Suleiman Kova, named the deceased as a South African identified as Piet Bruwer, 35. He was employed as a technician at the famous casino.

He was found dead in the house he was occupying in Masaki Baobao in Dar es Salaam by a company driver who went to pick him.

Commander Kova told reporters yesterday that the Grand Casino's driver, Mr Emanuel Malik, 29, was the one who informed the police about the incident.

Mr Kova stated that Mr Malik, who resides in Victoria area, found his boss dead. Next to the body were opened bottles of brandy, drinking water on the stool and a soft drink.

A packet of Iceberg cigarettes and a box of matches were also found near the body apart from several cigarette buts.

Police alleged yesterday that another item found near the body was a used matchbox with a white powder in it.

Police further alleged that the deceased's wife (name withheld) told them that her husband was using drugs.

The body of the deceased was preserved at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Mr Kova said.

Last month two foreigners, Messrs Salman Zubeir, 41, a Canadian and Yusuph Sader, 31, a South African, were found dead in their room at the Harbour View Hotel.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Police established no foul play in connection with the two deaths.

Mr Kova is on record to have said that excessive drinking might have been the cause of the deaths.

"Our investigation has established that the two men had gone on a drinking binge the previous night when they consumed a lot of alcohol and possibly took drugs leading to them dying in their hotel rooms," he said.
