Uganda: Country Celebrates World Olympic Day

Kampala — For the first time in about a decade, Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate the World Olympic Day.

The newly elected Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) led by businessman Rogers Ddungu organised several activities at Makerere University grounds to mark the day on Sunday. "We appointed a number of volunteers, who have been going through schools the whole of this Olympic week. They have tried to sensitize students about Olympic sports," UOC general secretary Peninah Kabenge said.

Uganda last won an Olympic medal in 1996 when retired sprinter Davis Kamoga romped to 400m bronze in Atlanta. And UOC hopes that the sensitization campaign and Olympic Day festivities will help to reignite interest in sports countrywide.

"Our volunteers have tried to reach out to participants in all sports disciplines by visiting several venues. They have been teaching students values of UOC and arguing them to join sports.

We hope their efforts will produce some results," added Kabenge, who is determined to usher in a new era in the management of the hitherto tainted UOC.

Retired and active sportsmen teamed up with federation officials as they took part in football and basketball.
