Maputo — The Mozambican police seized about a tonne of the drug hashish last Friday night on Chonguene beach in the southern province of Gaza, according to a report in Tuesday's issue of the Maputo daily paper "Noticias".
Benedito Ndeve, spokesperson for the Gaza provincial police command, told reporters that the drug had been buried on the beach, located about five kilometres from the country's main north-south highway.
The drug was in packages the weight of which varied between 20 and 30 kilos. "The total weight is estimated at around 1,000 kilos", said Ndeve, "but a definitive weighing of the drug will be done in the near future".
"For a precise determination of the nature of the product seized, samples have been sent to the Central Criminal Investigation Laboratory in Maputo", he added, "and the results will be known in the next few days".
The police do not know who hid the hashish on the beach, but it is suspected that the drug was unloaded from a boat, and that its owners were storing it temporarily under the sand, while they arranged transport to a definitive destination.
The drug was discovered after local people tipped off the police about unusual movement of people and four wheel drive vehicles on the beach at dead of night.
"Work is under way to locate the owners of the product, and to discover where it came from and where it was going", said Ndeve.
