Zimbabwe: Zim, EU Talks - Troika Formed

24 June 2009

Harare — THE European Union has set up a troika that will meet with Zimbabwean officials in Harare soon to thrash out some sticky points and dialogue on the outstanding issues that will eventually lead to the normalisation of relations between Zimbabwe and the European bloc.

The EU troika is comprised of Swedish Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Czech Republic Ambassador to Zimbabwe and European Union representative to Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe side will be represented by senior officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Regional Integration and International Co-operation, Justice, Economic Planning and Investment Promotion and Industry and Commerce.

Speaking in an interview with The Herald yesterday evening, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Professor Welshman Ncube who attended EU- Zimbabwe meetings in Brussels last week, said the EU troika meeting with Zimbabwean officials was going to shape the future of the country.

"The dates of the meeting in Harare have not been set -- but will be known as soon as other members are back from Europe," he said.

According to Minister Ncube, the Zimbabwean delegation was going to table to the troika its commitment plan in implementing the Global Political Agreement and the time frame in thrashing out some outstanding issues that were of concern to the EU.

Minister Ncube said on the other hand, the EU was going to submit its commitment plan to address sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe over the years and the restoration of normal relations.

The minister said the Zimbabwean delegation that went to Europe had fruitful meetings in Brussels. The meetings were attended by Swedish Foreign Minister, its Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Sten Rylander, Czech Republic officials among others and the Zimbabwean delegation presented its draft framework on dialogue.

". . . It was discussed and the agenda was adopted and formal dialogue was supposed to begin in Harare," he said.

Minister Ncube said a number of issues were discussed during the meetings in Brussels, among them co-operation with the EU, the influence the EU could have on the World Bank and other multilateral financial institutions.

Zimbabwe has been under economic sanctions from members of the EU and they have had devastating effects on the people of Zimbabwe.

The sanctions were imposed in February 2002 after Britain, the former coloniser, successfully sold its bilateral disagreement with Zimbabwe over the land reform programme to its allies.

However, last week the EU and Zimbabwe embarked on the onerous task of mending ties with the two sides holding their first official talks in seven years when they met in the Belgium capital Brussels.

The dialogue is a foundation for the renewed relationship between the EU and Zimbabwe once the sticking points are ironed out.

The Zimbabwean delegation that went to Brussels was represented by Cdes Patrick Chinamasa, Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Elton Mangoma, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga, Minister Ncube, Tendai Biti and another group that was led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai who was already in Europe.

"Uplift"........

Please go away, your posts are doggerel........

No one here cares that people of African descent invented things....... of course they did and continue to do so, just like white people, brown people and Asian (I didn't want to call them "yellow") people have!

You post about some mysterious conspiracy to steal Africa from Africans - most of it historical in the sense it is over 100 years old.

In case you didn't get the memo - the colonialists left!

Your posts are tiresome and only cause a delay of scrolling through them (without reading them) to get to… [Read Full Text]

"Uplift".........it's on!

Since Mr. "Upliftdarace" likes to cut-&-paste, please allow me to respond in kind...........

Mr. Uplift:

I grew tired of your cut-&-paste doggerel, so I decided to fact-check your claims that Black Africans actually “invented” the things you have claimed they did (courtesy of the Black Inventors Museum in Los Angeles, California). Most of your claims are out and out WRONG or complete fabrications! Maybe you’ve heard of this “invention” called Wikipedia?

I have put counter-claims to your assertions that Black Africans “invented” many of the things you claim they have. As a matter of FACT it is somewhat… [Read Full Text]

Juhlman, thanks for clearing that information. It was worth your time because people should not post stuff just for the sake of it without properly researching. As for Jhollow, HE would be lucky turning into anything that has some form of brain.
