The Gambia Red Cross Society in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regional office based in Dakar, Senegal, last Tuesday assisted the fire victims of Jamali Babou village in the Sami District, Central River Region North.

The donated materials included cooking utensils, plastic buckets, pans, blankets, cloths, soaps, bed nets, mats and many other items. The donated items worth over seventy-five thousand dalasis, were distributed by Gabriel Saryeron, the International Committee of the Red Cross in Dakar. Speaking at the ceremony, Lamin Gassama, the dissemination coordinator of the Gambia Red Cross Society said the assistance was based on the assessment conducted by the Gambia Red Cross branch in The Gambia after the disaster.

He pointed out that the assistance is in line with the spirit which inspired the founding father of Red Corss, Henry Dannant to help the sick and the suffering. He said as given by its international mandate, the ICRC is committed to protect and assist victims of such conflicts and other situation of violence. The Alkalo of the village, Eliman Jeng, applauded the Gambia Red Cross Society and partners for their support. He informed them that they were seriously affected and since then, they have been receiving assistance from various people and institutions.
