Nairobi — The Lords Resistance Army has welcomed a UN decision to rescind the suspension of Mr Joachim Chissano as special envoy to the Uganda peace talks.

Noting that the talks were headed in the right direction, the LRA Peace delegation and the chief negotiator, Dr David Nyekorach-Matsanga, said the of suspension of Mr Chissano from the talks was a big distraction, "but we are happy that he is now back".

"On behalf of LRA Peace delegation, I want to thank the office of the UN secretary-general for listening to voices of peace lovers in the region. First and foremost, I wish to inform the world that there has been a great deal of silent diplomacy in this process in the last 6 months since Operation Lighting Thunder (OLT) was launched on December 14, 2008," he said.

Ceasefire

Dr Matsanga said he had met the chief mediator, Dr Riek Machar, Mr Chissano and insisted that LRA leadership was for peace.

He said that LRA was also calling for ceasefire and re-assembly so as to discuss and sign the final peace agreement.

"As a result of my tireless efforts for peace and my desire for peaceful resolution of northern Uganda conflict, the UN secretary-general has temporarily postponed President Chissano's address to the UN Security Council today or this month," he said.
