Recent report from the 2007 Demographic and Health Survey has revealed that only 4% of children in Liberia have birth certificates, while birth registration is recognized as a fundamental right by Liberia as a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Birth registration remains an essential step for all children to access basic social services such as health care.
The disclosure was made yesterday at a one day workshop hosted by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the
Ministry of Internal Affairs in collaboration with the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and Plan International for all stakeholders from Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount counties.
Accordingly, the work helped to sensitize all constituents on the need and demand for a universal birth registration system in Liberia; and for each county to develop a roll out plan to revitalize birth registration and certification throughout the country.
The release however maintained that the 14-year civil war has left the country without basic mechanisms to
register all births. The Government of Liberia and its partners are working together to reestablish a country wide system for birth registration.
