Tunisia: 2009 Carthage Investment Forum - Nobel Economy Prize Hails Tunisian Economic Model

25 June 2009

Tunis — Two guests of honor at the 2009 Carthage Investment Forum hailed the Tunisian economic model, as well as the mechanisms set up to contain the effects of the economic and financial crisis.

The 2004 Nobel economy prize, Mr Edward C. Prescott said that Tunisia is "doing well in these times of crisis" adding that the country is "doing better than the US". He also recommended exporting the Tunisian model which has attracted foreign direct investments and which is based on its human capital .

For his part, Mr Jean Claude Gaudin, the Mayor of Marseilles, stressed the fact that Tunisia which has heavily investment in the knowledge economy can become an economic platform between Europe and Africa, as well as playing a leading role in bridging both shores of the Mediterranean.

He also deplored the "timidity" of European investments south of the Mediterranean, where in spite of the crisis, growth rates nearing 5% have been recorded. He also called for establishing a long term Euro-Mediterranean partnership.

The Carthage Investment Forum is a yearly event organised by the Tunisian Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (FIPA), under the aegis of the Ministry of Development and International Cooperation.
