Zimbabwe: New Archbishop for Bulawayo

26 June 2009

Harare — POPE BENEDICT XVI has appointed the Very Reverend Father Alex Thomas Kaliyanil as the new Archbishop for Bulawayo, replacing Archbishop Pius Ncube, who resigned following the exposure of his illicit adulterous escapades in 2007.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops' Conference said the papal appointment was with effect from June.

Father Alex was born in 1960 in India and studied for priesthood at Jnana Deepa Didyapeeth, where he completed his philosophy and theology studies.

He also obtained a degree in economics from Mysore University and was ordained a priest for the Society of the Divine Word on May 7, 1988.

He came to Zimbabwe in 1989 and was first assigned as assistant priest at Holy Cross Parish in Tshabalala between 1990 and 1992.

Between 1992 and 2005, he was the parish priest for Embakwe Mission and St Joseph Parish respectively, and during that period, he was appointed the Archdiocesan financial administra- tor.

At the time of his appointment, he was superior of the Divine Word Missionaries in Zimbabwe and also an ex-officio advisor to the Catholic Development Commission (Caritas Zimbabwe).

He was also chaplain to the university students in Bulawayo.

Besides Indian languages and English, he speaks Ndebele and Shona fluently.
