Harare — AFRICAN countries should share experiences and help solve problems faced by member states, if the continent is to progress and claim its rightful position on the globe, Algerian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Ali Mokrani has said.
Speaking after meeting Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Stan Mudenge at his offices in Harare yesterday, Mr Mokrani said Algeria would continue to support Zimbabwe in its endeavour to revive its economy.
Mr Mokrani had visited Minister Mudenge to offer 72 bilateral scholarships for Zimbabwean students to study in Algeria under the country's Africa Scholarships Programme.
"We have always been supporting Zimbabwe and we will continue to do so and support the inclusive Government in its economic recovery programme.
"This year we have raised the number of students we are sponsoring to 72 from 55 because of our mutual friendship and we know that when they come back, they will serve as ambassadors of Algeria," he said. Ambassador Mokrani said he was impressed that the Zimbabwean Government was being transparent in the way in which the scholarships were being awarded.
Mr Mokrani said the scholarships were being offered to students intending to study mainly medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science, dentistry, agronomy, engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, biology, food technology, environment and ecology and the French language as per Zimbabwe's request.
Minister Mudenge commended the Algerian government for the scholarships, saying they came at an opportune time when the country was embarking on a massive economic recovery programme.
"Algeria is among the countries that have been helping Zimbabwe during difficult times and it is the second after South Africa to offer more scholarships.
"Ministry officials who have visited the students in Algeria on three occasions, indicated satisfactory progress of the students both in terms of learning and welfare aspects," he said.

the government of zimbabwe has not been giving students the financial support in fact students have been given a meagre 10 percent of the money they should be having.Its so unfortunate to learn that the number of students per year will be increased progressively despite the plight of zimbabwean students here in algeria.Young girls are now prostitutes.Its so appaling the situation is desperate.SAVE ALGERIAN
