Nigeria: I Did Not Betray ANPP, Yuguda Says

Muideen Olaniyi

26 June 2009

Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State who is to receive the official flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from President Umaru Musa Yarádua tomorrow says his decamping from All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) was not a betrayal.

Speaking during an interview with newsmen, Governor Yuguda said he was not only one of the founding members of PDP but also one of the longest serving Minister under the government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The governor, who said his migration from the PDP to ANPP was occasioned by circumstances, attributed his victory in 2007 gubernatorial elections to the love people of Bauchi State had for him and not on party affiliation.

When asked to comment on why left the ANPP and if such migration could not be regarded as a betrayal, Yuguda replied: "I was part and parcel of the PDP family until 2007 when I left PDP and joined ANPP. It was circumstances that made me to leave. I don't think it is necessary for me now to repeat the circumstances because I have spoken so much on the reason why I left then. I joined the ANPP, campaigned for three months and I won the election. I was the only elected governor that was not taken to court because of the transparency in the counting of my votes. The gap between me and the PDP candidate was wide. I can say it is not the ANPP that was the issue. It was me as Isa Yuguda that was the issue.

He berated the former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai for misrepresenting the country in the US.
