Zambia: China Hands Over Anti-Malaria Centre

26 June 2009

THE Chinese government yesterday handed over an anti-malaria centre with advanced medical equipment to the Zambian Government.

In another development, the Government has encouraged private sector driven initiatives to assist in delivering effective and affordable eye care services in the country.

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Li Qiangmin said in the next three years, the Chinese government would dispatch anti- malaria experts to Zambia for short team inspection and personnel training.

He said the project began in 2007, but that there was still a long way to go to ensure that the quality implementation of the measures were on schedule.

The Chinese government, he said, was concerned with the social welfare in Zambia and would try its best to help the Zambian people in various issues.

Speaking at the same occasion, deputy Minister of Health Mwendoi Akakandelwa said though remarkable strides had been made in combating the disease, malaria continued to be a leading cause of illness and deaths especially in children under the age of five.

And Health Minister, Kapembwa Simbao said during the official launch of the Vision Care Appasamy Eye Hospital in Lusaka yesterday that the Government had in the past being spending colossal sums of money on eye treatments abroad.

Mr Simbao said the Government was happy that the joint venture partnership between Vision Care Centre of Zambia and Appasamy Associates of India would provide Zambia with an unlimited pool of eye equipment and expertise.

Hospital managing director, Vijay Anaka said the hospital was able to perform both minor and major eye care services.
