Malawi's emphasis on small-scale farming is responsible for that county's rapid turnaround, reports the Mail & Guardian.
Following crop failures in 2005, which saw the country facing mass starvation, the Malawian government put into place policies which resulted in the country becoming a net exporter of grain in 2007. This rejuvenation of an ailing sector is attributed to the government's recognition of the vital role played by small-scale farmers in Africa's economy.
Kanayo Nwanze, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, praised Malawi, and said that African governments could ensure food security through investment in small farms.
