A young learner from the JG van der Wath Secondary School in Okahandja, Saghill Lee Kinda will represent Namibia at the first Youth Olympic Games slated for Singapore in August next year.
Kinda will not participate in any sporting event, but will take part in the Summer Youth Olympic Games' educational programme known as the 'Young Presenters' in which he and other participants will exchange ideas on media technology and journalism through several activities over the two weeks.
Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) member Joan Smith said they decided to take the Olympian Spirit outside the capital, and chose Okahandja as a partner.
She said the learners and teachers from the school chose Kinda to go to the Summer Youth Olympic Games from August 14-26 next year.
The theme of the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games is 'Young Presenters', which will be a multi-sport, cultural and educational event.
Smith said the event will bring together talented athletes from across the world with the aim of taking part in high-level competitions.
She added that the event will have 3 600 athletes between 14 and 18 years with 800 officials, 205 National Olympic Committee representatives, 800 media representatives, 20 000 local and international volunteers and 500 000 spectators.
