Tunis — The 4 th meeting of the Arab Women Organization's (AWO) Supreme Council has adopted Mrs Leila Ben Ali's propositions relative to the creation of an Arab international humanitarian law commission, and the setting up of an observatory of social and political legislations relative to the conditions of women.
The news was announced by Mrs Sarra Kannoun Jarraya, the Minister of women's affairs, childhood and elderly affairs, during a press conference in Gammarth of Thursday.
The Minister also announced the adherence of Iraq to the AWO, noting that16 counties are currently members of the Organization.
Regarding the Organization's strategy the Minister stressed Mrs Ben Ali's commitment to reinforce the integration of Arab women in the development process of Arab countries.
She also reiterated Mrs Ben Ali's call to boost the presence of the young Arab woman at the international youth conference which will be held in Tunis in 2010 under the aegis of the United Nations, at the initiative of the President of the Republic, who proposed that 2010 be an international youth year.
In response to a question on AWO's treatment of Arab women during armed conflicts, Mrs Wadouda Badrane, AWO's, director general said that the Organisation is currently dedicating part of its budget to support Arab women who suffer from such situations.
