Liberia: Tribal War Rages In Grand Kru

25 June 2009

Two tribes in Grand Kru County, for the past weeks, have been locked up in an intense battle over the control of a disputed land. Reports from the conflict zone speak of injuries on both sides.

The people of NIfa or Po-River and Patey are both claiming a stretch of land strategically located at their borders, deep into NIFA, which for the past years has been at the center of contention with past governments not doing much to resolve it amicably.

According to latest information from the war zone, fighting is ongoing on a daily basis between the men while women and children are relocated from their respective towns.

Nifa or Po-River, a costal area of three towns and Petay, located north of Nifa, are part of the Trehn Statutory District of Grand Kru County and are both sharing boundary with Garloway, a coastal town, all located west of Maryland County. The people of Nifa speak Kru while the people of Patey speak Grebo.

The latest tension erupted about three months ago, according to report available to this paper, when the people of Patey decided to brush the land which is to be belonging to the people of Nifa for farming purposes.

When information concerning the brushing of the land emerged, it is gathered that, the people of Nifa trooped to the area to apparently ascertain the information or in the same vein stop them (opponents) from doing anything on the land.

But information from the area is still scanty to the extent it is difficult to establish as to who first attacked the other.

Meanwhile, Grand Kru County District #2, which is part of the Trehn Statutory District, Representative Wesseh Blamo has confirmed the fighting between the two tribes.

He told legislative reporters at the Capitol Building Monday that serious fighting is ongoing with both of them using harmful weapons such cutlasses and traditional fighting weapons.

The lawmaker says up to now, fighting is still raging, there is not information of deaths, but that several persons are said to be seriously injured.

Though the fracas reportedly started about two to three months ago, Rep. Blamo however said information of the fighting between the two tribes echoed last week and that the fighting is spread to other villages of the two towns leaving many persons wounded.

He indicated that citizens of Petay and Po- River have a longstanding land dispute that needed to be resolved through peaceful means without any preconditions from either side.

In the wake of the unfolding situation, he has appealed to the government speedily set up the land commission to help with crisis arising from land disputes and embark on land reforms.

At the same time, this paper has learned that citizens of Nifa in Monrovia are preparing a formal complaint to the government any time this week.
