Gambia: Social Security Briefs the Press

Mamadou Dem

26 June 2009

A Press Briefing was organized by the Social Security Housing and Finance Corporation (SSHFC) on Thursday, 18th June, on the proposed Lamin/ Makumbaya Housing Project. Mr. Tumbul Danso, Managing Director of SSHFC, in his introduction, told reporters that the purpose of the briefing is to sensitize the public on the project which, he said, is a public private partnership in shelter delivery.

Mr. Tamsir Badjie, an official of SSHFC, said this Housing project is dubbed the 'Airport Residential Area Phase1' or 'Airport Housing Project Phase 1'. He said the land area is 216 hectares and consisting of 300 serviced plots; that it is a prime piece of land adjacent to the Banjul International Airport.

Mr Badjie said the project is a partnership between SSHFC and a renowned Gambian entrepreneur. According to him, the private entity surrenders its land to SSHFC for development; that a negotiated substantial portion of the land is owned by SSHFC and balance by the private entity. He added that the entity may opt to sell its portion of the land to SSHFC at a negotiated price.

According the Mr. Danso, their total investment is estimated in the sum of D400 million (four hundred million dalasi) and the implementation period is 24 months.

He said the project will enable SSHFC to access these prime pieces of land currently in private ownership for residential development. He added that the project will also enable them to achieve the dream of transforming the airport area into a modern metropolis in keeping with the current status of Gambians.

The Project, said the SSHFC Managing Director, is mainly targeting the middle and low income renters and those living in very crowded multi-shared family homes.

According to the officials, the process will commence soon inviting applications from interested Gambians living at home or in the Diaspora for the various facilities under the project and through the print and electronic media.

They said the Project composition will comprise the usual SSHFC Project options i.e Options 1-IV and that a co-financing arrangement is being pursued.

The briefing was attended by other media houses and officials of SSHFC.
