Kenya: Varsities Staff Get Pay Raise

Nairobi — Non-teaching staff at all public universities have been given a salary increase of 15 per cent.

The announcement was made at Egerton University during a meeting between the Inter-Public University Councils Consultative Forum and Universities Non-Teaching Staff Union.

The highest earner will be entitled to Sh115,945, up from the current Sh89,709, while the lowest will earn Sh100,817, up from Sh77,867. The lowest paid employees will also be entitled to Sh15,840 housing allowance, which has been increased from Sh14,400.

Not satisfied

The highest earner will have his house allowance increased from Sh51,000 to Sh54,825.

"The fact that we can negotiate and implement this agreement is very good," said Kenyatta University vice chancellor, Prof Olive Mugenda.

However, the union's secretary-general, Dr Charles Mukhwaya, said they were not fully satisfied with the increment.

He said they only signed the agreement so that operations continue uninterrupted.
