Nigeria: And My Idol Died

Dele Momodu

(Page 2 of 2)

You don't have to be a doctor to know he must have died of exhaustion. The London concert was meant to be his final farewell to the world. He had gone as far as getting a personal trainer to beef him up for the tour. His existence depended on proving this ultimate point. It was a dangerous fixation that would prove fatal. He had been off-stage for too long. Unknown to him, age was no longer on his side. Everything that has a beginning must have an end. He did not accept the verdict of God. The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh. It was time to go and the time to be set free.

The elephant collapsed two nights ago. I cried like a baby. My wife had always found my love for Michael Jackson very strange. If she did not know me well, she may have suspected me of unprintable inclinations. I had wished Fela truly kept death in his pouch. We would have begged him to keep Michael for us forever. But Fela himself was killed by death. It is one debt we all owe. Sooner or later, the king of all bailiffs must come, and take possession of all. This is the reason we must do our best and leave the world better than we met it.

The Moshood Abiola of Iran

I was working on this title when news came that Michael Jackson had died. In my state of confusion, I mistakenly deleted my write up I had started in Ghana since Wednesday. The Iranian saga was meant to be the hottest news in the world. I had been struck by the similarities between our election of June 12, 1993, and that of Iran on June 12, 2009. When some people chose to obliterate the date from our history, little did they realise that it was going to resurrect in Iran of all places.

The hotly contested election between President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hossein Mousavi clearly reminds us of the day our leaders killed our joy in Nigeria. Like Chief Moshood Abiola, Mousavi is fighting hard to reclaim his mandate. But the lesson in it for us is big. While the Nigerian warlords are warming up for another orgy of election rigging and violence, they must be told to watch international news and see how technology is changing the world. By the year 2011, the world would have even advanced further.

For those politicians sharing positions in advance, providence will surprise them. It is stupid for anyone to think Nigeria will never change for the better. When tomorrow comes, the world will witness our miracle. Nigerians will rise up in unison and chase out the "greedy pigs" who have held us ransom for too long.

Have you noticed the revolution going on in Iran through the exceptional use of Facebook and Twitter. As if I knew in advance, I wrote about this technology on June 13, the day after the Iranian election was held, and Iran exploded the following day. Since then the Iranian leaders have been driven to desperation. All efforts to block the news from the rest of the world have failed. Election riggers in Nigeria shall experience the same frustration when next they steal our votes.

There will NEVER be another Michael Jackson - NEVER. What the people of Africa and the rest of the World now need to do is to pray for his lovely sould to rest in Peace forever. This Beautiful Brother Soul should always be remember in a best possible ways. We all in this world have made mistakes; and some have made worst mistakes than others. What the world need to remember is that: this brother gave out all his best, provided and did more good than most people in higher positions. Therefore, let remember him for his hard work, his loyal to the suffering of many people, his sincerity; but most of all, the beauty in him. He is/ was/ and always a beautiful soul. Michael, Your soul will continue to rest in peace and the world will NEVER forget your greatness, and of who you are. May the Lord bless your soul as you left us all in tears wondering why you left so early.
